Co. Longford VEC, as patron of the school, has approved this publication. Copies of this policy are available on request at this school.

PART B: Admissions to the School
General policy on admission of students to Lanesboro Community College
The board of management of Lanesboro Community College welcomes all eligible students who apply for admission, including those with special educational needs. The board is aware, in regard to admissions, of the principles and requirements of a democratic society and will both respect and promote respect for diversity in society as regards values, beliefs, traditions, languages and ways of life. In particular the board is aware of its obligations under relevant equality legislation. The board, as required by law, will have regard to the efficient use of resources, and will have regard to all these considerations in managing the admission of students and afterwards in operating the school. The board is fully aware of its obligations to provide for maximum accessibility of students to the school and to promote the right of parents to send their child to the school of their choice. The board of management also has a legal duty to Co. Longford VEC as the School’s patron to uphold the characteristic spirit of the School as a multi denominational school.
General policy on participation by students in Lanesboro Community College
It is the aim of the school to enable students to participate as fully as possible in all school programmes, both curricular and extra-curricular, and will have procedures in place aimed at facilitating the involvement of students in the operation of the school, having regard to their age and experience. As a means of progressing this involvement, the board enabled the students to establish a student council. In the case of students with disabilities, their participation in certain school activities may have to be restricted in order to ensure their safety and that of other students; however the general aim will be to enable all students, including those with disabilities, to participate as fully as possible in the life of the school, consistent with maintaining the safety, health and welfare of all members of the school community.
Admission and participation by students with disabilities or other special educational needs
Students with disabilities and special needs are encouraged to enter the school and participate in all programmes on offer to the extent that their doing so is consistent with their own safety and that of other students, and the school will, in so far as resources permit, provide special assistance and facilities to enable them to participate in the life of the school, unless to do so would expose them or others to an unacceptable degree of risk, would be excessively disruptive of any programmes or activity or give rise to excessive costs that the school could not reasonably be expected to bear.
Parents/Guardians of students with special needs must provide the school, in advance, with the following information:
- Details of disability or special education needs.
- Copies of psychological/educational reports.
- Details of medical condition (if applicable)
- Details of resources provided in primary school or previous school.
- Special resources or supports required.
- Any other special facilities required.
Parents of students with special needs should apply as early in the process as possible and supply the school with the required information as applications for extra resources have to be submitted to the Special Education Needs Organiser (SENO) in March prior to entry. Then, in line with the Education Act 1998, students are admitted if the school can provide an education which is appropriate to the child’s needs.
Policy on suspension and expulsion:
The board is required by law to maintain reasonable order and safety throughout the School and on all school activities, and discharges this duty through the school staff, mainly the Principal and teachers. In addition, good order is necessary to enable teaching and learning to take place in the School. The maintenance of safety and good order requires the drafting and implementation of a code of behaviour (which is itself required by law) in which it is a requirement to set out the means by which the school staff will deal with behaviour that is considered unacceptable; these procedures are to be found in the School’s code of behaviour. The two most serious sanctions available to the school are suspension and expulsion. Expulsion is normally seen as a last resort, only resorted to when all other sanctions have been exhausted and the student and parents/guardians have been made aware, by notice in writing, that expulsion is being contemplated by the board and invited to make their case on behalf of their child (In the case of student over the age of eighteen, these students, may, if they so choose, makes their own case, or may be accompanied by their parents). Some incidents of misbehaviour may be so serious however that expulsion is the only appropriate response available to the school, and in those cases that sanction will be applied. In every case the expulsion will be preceded by a suspension from school activities to enable this exchange of views to take place. (Should an expulsion ultimately be imposed, information will be provided on how to appeal this decision, initially to the VEC, and afterwards, if necessary, to the Department of Educational and Science.
Suspensions will be availed of either after all of the minor sanctions (which are listed in the School’s code of behaviour) have been exhausted, or as a response to a single act of gross misconduct for which any less sanction would be inappropriate in the circumstances; in this case, the suspension will be imposed without prior warning. Suspensions may be from attendance at school and all school activities, or may be more limited in scope and effect. The Principal is empowered to impose a suspension, and will inform the board as appropriate.
First Year Students.
All pupils transferring to this school from primary level are expected to attend from the start of the school year as this increases opportunities for achieving the best educational outcomes.
- The school advertises in January for enrolment for the following September.
- The principal or deputy principal, with current first year students, visit each of the local feeder primary schools.
- An Open Day is held in late January or early February each year. Fifth and sixth class students from local primary schools are invited into the school to view the various departments and to sample school life.
- This is followed, on the same evening, by an Open Evening for parents/guardians. Applications are accepted at this stage. All students are welcome to enrol as outlined in the various acts.
- Copies of psychological reports are required at this stage so that applications to the Special Education Needs Organiser (SENO) can be submitted and processed at the correct time, ensuring that resources are in place at the start of the school year.
- An extensive Transfer Programme takes place over the next twelve months and all incoming first year students and their parents are encouraged to participate.
- All provisionally enrolled first year students are assessed in May of year of enrolment. (Tests include the NRIT and a reading test.)
- All first year students have an induction day on the first day of term and are expected to attend
- It is in the best interest of all students to follow the above enrolment procedures, participating in the transfer programme and the taster programme.
- Late applications will be considered until August 31st. After this, only in exceptional circumstances will applications be considered.*
- The parents/guardians and the student register their acceptance of the Code of Behaviour.
* Exceptional circumstances include the following:
- Family relocating to the area.
- Medical reasons.
Transfer of students from other post primary schools.
Only in exceptional circumstances will transfer from another school during the school year be entertained. However, the Board of Management recognises a student’s right to education and that a ‘second chance’ may in some circumstances benefit a student.
On this basis, an application for transfer from another post primary school will only be considered in the following cases:
- The student’s family is relocating to the area.
- The subjects available are suitable to the applicant.
- There is sufficient space in each of the classes the student would be attending. (using the maximum class size guidelines)
- The applicant’s presence is unlikely to adversely affect the education of students already enrolled in the school.
- The applicant has no previous history of substance abuse or of the distribution of such substances.
- The applicant has never seriously harassed/assaulted/bullied another student or staff member.
- The applicant has not previously hindered the educational progress of other students, ie. has not persistently interfered with teaching and learning and, by doing so, infringed on the rights of other students to their education.
Before completing the official Application form all applicants must provide the following:
- Reports on attendance, punctuality and behaviour from previous schools.
- Copies of all school reports and State Examination results.
- A letter of reference from the Principal of the previous school.
- Reasons for seeking to transfer.
- Copies of psychological reports and details of special resources or supports required.
- Details of any outside agencies supporting the student.
When the above conditions are met and the required paperwork has been received, the application will go before the Board of Management for consideration.
Transfer of exam students mid year is generally not considered as it is not in the best educational interest of the student and can impact negatively on exam results. There are also implications for project work.
